I tried to talk a little about graph A, but from a statistical standpoint,
graph B is better for drawing conclusions about the relationship between
number of guns and mass shootings. Since graph A is just gross numbers, it can
easily be skewed by large and small populations. In order to draw accurate
conclusions from data sets, it is better to look at the rates at which events
occur rather than just total numbers. For example, say I'm comparing 2 hockey
players goal scoring abilities with player A scoring 30 goals and hockey
player B scoring 40 goals. The gross numbers say player B is a better goal
scorer. But what if player A only played in 40 games while B played in 60?
Then A would score 0.75 goals a game and B scores 0.67 which would more
accurately indicate that A is the better goal scorer. This is just a round
about way of saying that gross numbers can be misleading and that looking at
the rates of events is better for establishing trends, if they exist.

On your second question, I am saying that there is in fact not an association
between guns and mass shooters with or without the U.S. included. I wanted you
to exclude the U.S. since it's location on the graph will draw your eye away
from all of the other data points and make you think there is a connection
when in reality the data is saying otherwise. One outlier like the U.S. does
not change the fact that all of the other data points are random and not
correlated.
