Upper Arlington, Ohio

As a senator from Iowa, 1954-60, and 16 years as a representative, Grandad
Thomas E Martin of Iowa, a conservative republican, wrote many pieces of
legislation for the opposite side of the aisle. (135 opposite side came to him
in his last year alone.) Why?

Because he, and his wife, Doris (a former K-12 teacher in a one room, rural
school house with degrees in Latin and English) would always write the
legislation in words so clear and unambiguous that any judge or juryman would
understand the logic and meaning of the legislation, every single phrases,
clause, comma or non, or semicolon.

What did he get out of writing legislation so clear and unambiguous that was
not in his constituents or party’s interests? Simple.

No unintentional damage, or no more severe than the Democrats wanted. And
often a creative, clear, unambiguous legislation that actually benefited
everyone.

In 1957 I sat watching grandad and grandmom spend four hours on one key
sentence to get the best phrasing that was clear in the idiom and ordinary
language of every part of our nation and to every juryman or judge.

Let us insist our legislators develop the humility to employ craftspersons
with such skills.
