It seems to me that this comes down to bad training and a bad mentality. In my
opinion, when you decide to become a police officer your first objective
becomes protecting the public, not yourself. Time and time again we see
officers escalating situations for no reason to arrest a ""suspect"" for non-
violent crimes to the point that somebody ends up dead. This should never
happen except in situations where there is undeniable actions to threaten the
officer's life. Instead, a suspect twitches his arm the wrong way or happens
to have a cell phone and they get shot immediately.

Yes, perhaps the officer must retreat or maybe sometimes the bad guy gets
away, but what world are these officers living in where using deadly force is
necessary for somebody who was seen breaking into cars? Selling CD's?
Cigarettes?

Additionally, we need common sense gun control to prevent so many people
getting illegal guns - that way the police don't need to reasonably expect
every single criminal to be in possession of a weapon.
