Yes, just desserts. In life it seems that the bad guys just get away. In a way, this is just catharsis.

I've just voted for your book. The boy's strategy for survival in a dysfunctional family is highly feasible. Countless mothers have probably been forced to stand by and helplessly watch that kind of cruelty.

Very true. It is a sad situation, but those abused physically and emotionally fall into a state of helplessness. I think only dramatic events allow for change in such situations.
