Natural gas faces headwinds? Nonsense - in 2018, the myth that renewable
energy will ever be capable of replacing it, together with a rush to shut down
nuclear plants, are guaranteeing gas and other fossil fuels an unlimited
future in U.S. electricity generation.

As a volunteer for Californians for Green Nuclear Power I've been on the front
lines in the battle to save carbon-free Diablo Canyon (nuclear) Power Plant
from closure. Because it would be replaced by gas we're being opposed by the
biggest natural gas interests in the state - Sempra Energy and Royal Dutch
Shell, among others. These companies insist their product is only a ""bridge""
to a renewable future, when people don't use electricity at night or when it's
not windy, when they will presumably walk away from $billions in assets in the
name of saving the environment. Again: nonsense.

I challenge the assertion that the usual cast of characters currently forming
policy in this country ACTUALLY believe this. It is not clear to me, in the
year 2018 (acknowledging Brooks' point about whatever circumstances existed as
he was coming of age) that we all agree about our collective strategic and
moral goals, but disagree about how to best achieve them.

Quick example... Does anyone genuinely argue that the heated debates about
LGBT rights is a matter where everyone agrees the LGBT community deserves to
be treated 100% equally to everyone else, but we are debating how best to
ensure that equality? Of course not. In fact, the present administration
recently took it upon itself to argue against its own department that gay
employees may be discriminated against simply for being gay. Do we all agree
transgender people deserve respect, but debating how to show it? The same
administration tried to dismiss transgender people in uniform via TWEET,
citing the financial ""burden"" they represent to a 3/4 trillion dollar
defense budget.

Look, conservatives and liberals alike no PRECISELY where the tone of our
national discourse is being set. The nation gambled that tone and rhetoric
would not be relevant to the state of our union. But it IS deadly serious. We
are being ""led"" to a very dangerous place.
