And, as the NYT editorial today pointed out, the US has a $2 billion dollar
trade SURPLUS in steel with Canada. It's hard to avoid the conclusion that
Trump's real goal is to undermine and destroy rule based international trade.
And there is no reason to think other countries would accept as an alternative
bilateral trade agreements with the US, as some commenters suggest, since they
would have no reason for believing that the US would actually abide by any
bilateral agreement. In fact, they would have excellent reason for believing
the US wouldn't abide by any bilateral agreement if, for whatever, domestic
political reason or sheer whim, it decided it didn't want to abide by some
part of it.
