Story: Those that are silent
Story bit: Daylight robbery
Congratulations, you’re completely lost! Sighing, Terone glanced around, looking for a reference point. All the while his hands dug about in his pockets. Where was the blasted- Too late he remembered this morning, the thing going off during English and… shoving it… into his bag… which was in the car.
“I’m such an idiot,” he groaned, cutting through a side alley. It lead, surprise surprise, to another alley. But this one had people in. He cursed under his breath, slamming his back into the shadows. Cautiously, he leaned around the corner to observe them.
There were five of them. Three older, two a little younger. It was immediately obvious that it was a fight of some kind from the sudden flurry of legs and fists. In the semi-darkness it was hard to pinpoint exact movements but he could see flashes of studs and buckles, the swirl of cloth. Hear the thud of flesh on flesh and the grunts, taunts and insults.
With one last flourish, the younger pair sent the older three smashing into the wall and sprawling across the ground. They both laughed and high fived. Now they were staying still, Terone could see that one was dark haired, the other blond.
The dark haired one crouched down and began to rifle through his opponents pockets. The blond one glanced about, eyes darting here and there. For a second, they locked onto Terone.
Whipping around, he pressed himself against the alley wall, heart pounding. Had he been spotted? Had that guy seen him? Was he about to get mugged? Murdered? Deep breaths calmed his mind a little and he forced himself a second look.
A hand met his face, dragging him out from his hiding place and slamming him into a different wall. The hand then moved, planting itself on the brick beside his head while the other hand did the same on the other side. The boy the hands belonged to stared down at Terone, eyes widening slightly. They were very pale green eyes, almost luminescent in the darkness, set into an odd face. Bronze skin and distinctly Japanese features but pale eyes and sandy blond hair that just didn’t quite match. He looked an odd collage of nationalities, cobbled together into a not unpleasing face. Right now, that face was set in a look of surprise. The eyes narrowed and looked Terone up and down. “You’re a boy, right?” he demanded.
“Through and through,” Terone replied, smiling a little and ignoring the discomfort of the boy’s closeness. “Why?” He pushed himself off the wall, invading the boy’s personal space. “Does that concern you?” Smirking, Terone laughed lightly, breath brushing across the boy’s cheek bones. The pale eyes widened and a slight blush crept along his skin.
There was something exquisitely amusing about making boys blush. Especially ones like this one who probably went out of their way to prove their heterosexuality.
“Hills!” The dark haired boy had finished his daylight robbery. “Who’s that?”
“Uh.” Hills leaped away from Terone, hand flying to the back of his neck in a gesture of awkwardness, undoubtedly grateful that the lack of light hid most of his blushes. “Dunno. Some… guy… skulking around.”
As the other boy drew closer, Terone got a better look at him. It was Ren Trestan. While plenty of rumours about him had been supplied to Terone’s ears, however, he’d never actually spoken to the other boy. Seeing him outside of school was odd. A little jarring. It was clear that this was Ren’s comfort zone, there was no tense hostility set into ever line of his body. Instead, his limbs moved with a supple fluidity and freedom often seen in dancers or gymnasts.
“I know you,” Ren muttered slowly. “You’re that jerk at school who’s surrounded by girls.”
“What can I say?” Terone chuckled, forcing a smile to hide his rising nerves. “I’m a natural born lady’s man.”

“You’re also rich,” Ren snapped, unamused. “Gimme your wallet and phone and whatever else you got or you’re gonna end up like those guys.” He jabbed a thumb at the unconscious men further down the alley.
Sighing, Terone slipped the Rolex off his wrist and dug the wallet out of his jacket. “I lost my phone,” he apologised good naturedly, as though he were apologising for being late meeting a friend rather than being robbed. “Though my clothes are designer. Would you like those?” This teasing remark sent another wave of blushing across Hills’ face.
Ren just stared at him, eyebrow raised, before glancing at his friend. “The hell is wrong with you?” he demanded.
“N- nothing!” The flush darkened and a glint fixed itself in his eyes. “What’re you making jokes for anyway?!” He grabbed the front of Terone’s shirt. “We could kill a pretty boy like you and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
“Obviously.” Smiling still, he supressed the nerves writhing in his stomach. Just go away soon, please. Leave me alone.
Lips creased into a scowl, Hills tightened his grip on Terone’s shirt. And felt the chain beneath the fabric. “Jewellery, eh? Should’ve guessed a pretty boy like you would want pretty girl’s stuff.”
Confused, Ren gave him an odd look. “We wear jewellery.”
“Shut up.” He tugged the chain out from under the shirt. Instantly, the smile dropped from Terone’s face.
Not that.
Anything but that.
“What’s this then?” Hills asked, shoving the blue jewel in Terone’s face.
“Put that down,” Terone hissed, ignoring the slight pleasure he got from how taken aback the other boys looked. “You can’t have that.” Eyes fixing on Hills’, he growled, “Give that back and leave me alone.”
Hills flinched. It were as though a spark of electricity had snapped across his spine. The pendant fell against Terone’s chest and he backed away almost automatically.
Utter confusion was plain to see across Ren’s face, quickly morphing to mirror the alarm, if not the suspicion, on Hills’. “Let’s get out of here,” the blond snapped, turning quickly and striding down the alley.
“What?” Ren remained where he stood. “Why?”
“Come on!” Not looking, Hills grabbed his friend’s arm dragging him along behind him. Motionless, Terone watched them leave staring down Ren’s baffled yet dangerously sharp red-brown glare.
That sharp look fixed on him on the rare occasion that they passed each other in the school corridor or the even rarer occurrences when they shared a lesson together. But Ren said nothing. After a few weeks, he barely showed up to school once a fortnight. When he did, he appeared have forgotten about Terone entirely.

"Just tell us and we'll let you-"
"Go?" Peacock laughed, cutting Terone off. "Firstly, I highly doubt you have any say in the matter. Secondly, I've learned not to trust a single thing a Pretty boy like you says." Hurt flared in Terone's expression. "See!" Peacock gestured at him emphatically. "Every emotion is a carefully trained act. To fool people, to trick them."
Several seconds passed in complete, intense silence. Then Terone sighed and let his mask of meticulously trained emotions drain away. His normally kind face hardened to a blank, icy coldness like steel or ice, freezing eye fixed on Peacock's expression. It was strange, how different he looked when he wasn't keeping up appearances. Still beautiful but with the terrible neutrality and remoteness of an angel statue at church.
A smile spread across Peacock's lips and he laughed. "I'm glad," he said, "that that's all that lies beneath. See, the prettiest man I know. And I mean, he's stunning, big green eyes like you and a smile to melt the hardest heart. He's also the cruellest, bitterest, angriest and most twisted person I've ever met." The smile bunched up in a sardonic smirk. "See, UC isn't a place for normal people. It's place for monsters. And if UC made you, doesn't that kinda make you a monster?"
