Great stand alone piece. You write very well and don't make the mistake of trying to show colloquial speech patterns by misspelling words. Few writers know enough to trust their reader to use imagination.

I learned in an early story that affected speech was too hard to read so thank you so much for noticing that. Mama Tried to Raise a Lady is up at Fictionwise.com as a download if you are interested in the rest of the stories.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. It really did happen many years ago now.

Your story is so exciting and funny too. It reflects some scenes that many couple come across. The idea of string divorce is symbolic too, because many parents actually choose to live together only for the sake of their kids, while each one is living on his own.The string can be real or imaginary...Voted.

There is something compelling in the story, it makes the reader want to know more and that's not a bad thing. It's entertaining to be taken on a family type trip and to be in there at the Grange when the dancing hots up. Nostalgia, the cowboy, the music. It all comes back and I love the book for stirring up the memories. Good stuff RD keep writing.

"Mama Tried to Raise a Lady" has been out so long that it's not really selling any more but I still like to send off a story out of it now and then.
Sometimes kids like it. I may try to write about my teen age years whereby my mother tried to teach me to dance, to dress up and to... Show more

I know this story in favct I have a copy on my desk at this very moment. RD is so prolifice in her writings and I often wonder why she hasn;t risen to the heights of a a first class author.(Which she is) Any thing she writes is always first class. She is one of my favourite authors and I have read her stoties for over twenty five years. Long may she reign, Will

Oh Will you are always so positive about my work. If I can make one person happy with one story, I've done my job. I do love to write so it can't really be work can it? Thank you for the years of support and gentle suggestions and critiques. I couldn't have done much without you.

This is one terrific chapter. Great forward motion. Engaging narration. Rock solid. It was like a birdseye view a day in a family's life. I was virtually there. Great job, RD.

Thank you Carmen. You know, life as it was then will never happen again. But I was myself then and still am. You are a good friend of many years. Happy New 2010. Wishing you health and happiness always!
