The assault lasted minutes, but they were unprepared, so mayhem ensued. Cpl Hemlock reacted as best he could, but it only amounted to taking cover inside a bunker. The rest of his company was completely slaughtered—shot and hacked to pulp.
The enemy left as swift as they came, not once seeing him. He walked through the field, trying not to step on an intestine here, an eyeball there, slipping on blood despite his best efforts. He circled around; the bodies seemed endless. Looking into the distance and smirking, his brain emptied so the insanity might happily pour itself in.
