Inhuman By Melissa Cazarin

For My Husband I dealy love, Chris

As I stand before the judge, fully aware of the crime i have comitted, a grin creeps onto my face. It’s slow, subtle at first, like a shadow stretching in the fading light. It’s not because of what I’ve done—no, it’s not pride. And it’s not nerves, either, despite what some might call a "nervous smile." I know what they’re thinking: Look at her—smiling after everything she’s done.

But the truth? I don’t feel anything. No fear. No guilt. No remorse. Hell, I’m not even sure I’ve ever felt anything at all. Maybe I’m wired wrong. Maybe I’m just empty.

The tension in the courtroom was palpable as Evelyn’s lawyer stood confidently, addressing the judge. The defense had been carefully building their case, and now came the pivotal moment.

“Your Honor,” the lawyer began, pacing slightly in front of the jury, “Evelyn did not even lay a hand on the victim, let alone kill them.”

A collective gasp rippled through the audience, murmurs erupting in disbelief.

Silence settled again, though the weight of the lawyer’s statement lingered in the air.

“This tragic incident was a result of the victim’s own choices and actions, as I have thoroughly outlined with the evidence provided. Eveylin should have a second option”

The judge adjusted their glasses, looking down at Evelyn over the rim. Her pale face betrayed no emotion, though her fingers trembled slightly as she gripped the edge of the table.

After a pause, the judge leaned forward, addressing the courtroom. “This is not a matter to take lightly,” they began sternly, their tone measured but firm. “Miss Evelyn Faye, your actions—or lack thereof—may not align with the severity of the accusations against you. However, every person is entitled to a second chance.”

Second chance.

“You will be held accountable for your choices, both past and future,” the judge continued, “but it is not within this court’s purview to condemn you unfairly for actions you did not commit. The truth will not be ignored.”

Evelyn’s lawyer gave her a reassuring nod, but the prosecution’s glare was ice-cold, their lips pressed into a tight line. Evelyn knew the fight wasn’t over yet.

The judge’s voice cuts through the quiet like a dull blade.

“Evelyn Faye,” he begins, and I catch the faint curl of disgust in the way he says my name. “I could sentence you to life in prison. But I believe in giving second chances.”

Second chances. What an idiot.

He clears his throat, shifting in his seat. “I have another option for you to consider,” he continues, his words slow and heavy like he’s carrying the weight of the entire courtroom. “You have two options: plead guilty to the crimes you’ve committed and receive a life sentence, or spend the rest of your life in a psychiatric hospital.”

The silence that follows is thick, suffocating. The courtroom isn’t just quiet—it’s holding its breath, hanging on every word like it’s the verdict for their own souls.

“A psychiatric ward doesn’t sound so bad, does it?” I say to myself, though the words never leave my lips. The thought lingers, dark and tantalizing. Padded walls, locked doors, doctors who think they can fix me—how quaint.

But before I answer, I let my gaze wander. My eyes find them. The parents of the one I ripped from this world. They’re clinging to each other like if they let go, they’ll collapse under the weight of their grief. The mother is trembling, her lips moving in a desperate, broken prayer.

“Why, God... Why?” she whispers, over and over, her words barely audible but cutting through the room like a scalpel.

The sight of her—of them—doesn’t move me. It should, right? That’s what they want. Tears, apologies, begging for forgiveness. But all I feel is that grin stretching wider across my face.

It’s not just a smile anymore. It’s a statement.

I watch her crumble further, her sobs growing
