The door to the abandoned library slowly creaked open with a slight creak and groan that almost went by anyone else’s ears unnoticed nearly caused the young woman entering to do a one eighty and sprint back into the ghost town she had paused to trek through for supplies after her mad escape from her home. Instead, she merely jumped an inch off the ground, the contents of her bag and her rifle bouncing and moving in rhythm to her own movements, taking in a deep shaky breath through her nose and her mouth to steady herself before she fully entered the library, the surprisingly still in good condition library despite it’s closure probably because it had only been two weeks or more.
Giving a silent swallow, the woman took one more step inside, taking a quick look around to ensure she was really alone and not in the company of those black snakes. There didn’t appear to be anyone in plain sight in the smaller than average library and to be real, there probably would never be anyone wandering the library to check out books or anything else again…unless she found a solution to this problem. She heaved a heavy sigh, her head bowing slightly for a few seconds before she raised it again to stare forward and walk further inside.
Her right hand reaching back to the door knob missed it a couple times before she managed to grab it and pull the door toward her, closing it behind her. At the sound of the door shutting, the woman did not react like she did when she opened the door the first time. Instead, she merely huffed in what could be considered an annoyance and continued into the building, a hand reaching out to feel for a light switch.
It took her a few minutes to find what she was looking for, but by some dumb luck she managed to find the light switches which were slightly dusty from misuse and flipped one of the switches with one finger, half of her expecting them to not work given what had happened and the other half hoping they would. To her surprise, the lights overhead her flickered for a few seconds before turning on completely, bathing the entire library and her in an eerie yellow glow, a color that reminded her of one of her candles on that terrible night.
She gave a silent shudder at her train of thought, but forced it back to the darkest pits of her mind, choosing instead to focus on her current mission. She walked toward the center of the library, passing by unused, upturned and dusty tables and chairs, some of them were broken as if the people who were using them suddenly got up from them in a panic and simply left them to rot. She wasn’t entirely sure if that was the case but she didn’t doubt the possibility. Her steps slowed to a crawl as her head turned this way and that, trying to find her prize, the thing that would probably contain the answers to her problem.
She ignored the hundreds of abandoned books that were left behind on old wooden shelves that were surprisingly still in good condition as she walked around, though she couldn’t help but sneak a glance at the shelves before she forced her head to continue searching. As informative as books could be, she didn’t think they would be of much help unless she was really desperate to find answers. She wasn’t right now but she had a feeling that would change soon when she began her search.
She swallowed hard to force down the goddamn boulder that had formed in her throat as she tried to force her thoughts away, but they just kept coming back like a bunch of unwanted pests within her mansion even with her many attempts to get rid of the little bastards. The problem had gotten so bad that she had to call an exterminator to get rid of them finally, till every one of them were gone unlike those black snakes still living in her mansion even now as she trended.
Truthfully, that problem was taken care of but the feeling and idea of them still being in her mansion lingered in the back of her mind much like the thoughts going through her head as much as she didn’t want to think about them, except somehow two times more stronger and it created a very uncomfortable
