Once I'd finally completed my training with the order they allowed me to go back home for a few weeks whilst they finalized the details of my newfound work and essentially erasing my identity.
They didn't give me much in terms of weapons apart from a knife and a burner phone, I was supposed to blend in and avoid anything if not everything. But walking around my home town of New York at night for a simple milk run for my Dad did have me a little intrigued about what might happen if someone tried something with me.
Prior to the Greymen extending an invitation, I'd only actually been robbed maybe twice in all my 20 years. But now, since I know how to defend myself I was curious.
entering the deli headed over to the fridge, grabbed the first bottle of milk I saw and headed for the front desk, "$4.60 pal" The Brooklyn shopkeeper asked, I pulled out a $5 note and gave it to him. within 4 seconds he accepted it on his computer, put the money in and had my change ready, "nah, don't worry about it" I smiled waving my hand a little before picking up the bottle and walking to the exit. I made a left and walked down the exact same path I used to get to the deli. The winter chill had finally made itself present once I could see my breath, this part of the city, meant the cars and some of the tourists remained. Apparently something that the Holy Knights would do for simple patrolling practice is simply walk around New York at night trying to subtly prevent crime.
Once I learnt about them I was tempted to try out but it was a minimum requirement that you served at least 5 years for the Order to show the loyalty.
Upon crossing the street, 2 blocks away from the deli I heard the sound of something slamming into a dumpster. Naturally it caught my attention so I followed to where I thought the sound originated, pulling out the small 3 inch knife that was provided to me.
"HELP!" I heard someone faintly shout, flipping the knife around into an icepick grip. I turned into the alley and was presented with a man in a hoodie holding a kitchen knife to a young woman who in a grey trench-coat, from how he stood and stared at her.
I casually walked to them and the young woman saw me, I was hoping he wouldn't notice, "HEY! HELP ME!" She shouted, that ruined the surprise plan.
He immediately spun around, the bags under his eyes, his bony hands and the visible rust now on the knife caught me off guard. He was desperate, he was scared so any means to not take his life would have to be taken.
I continued to walk towards him casually, my own knife remaining unseen when I was merely meters away from him he swung and I dodged but ducking and side-stepping right. with me free hand I punched him under his ribs on his left, his body contorted to the punch and he dropped down to one knee and I stood up and punched his jaw, he head recoiled and he fell to the ground. I flipped my knife around in slid it back into my sheath, I looked up at the young woman, I gestured for the young man to go and as she stepped over the man and he grabbed her leg suddenly.
I reacted and pulled the knife out, pushed her off of him, she fell to the ground, before I knew it the knife was in his throat and she was watching. I looked up and saw the fear in planted on her face. I looked down and the knife was in his throat, the small flashback of protecting your allies in takedown training had kicked. I looked back up at her let go of the knife and took a step back, "AHHH MONSTER!" she screamed, I continued to walk out of the alley way, but it echoed in my mind, over and over again. I made a mistake, I made an impulsive decision. I heard loud but frequent footsteps, I quickly turned around and saw the woman running. Good.
Let the hell end, this was my first mistake... Possibly the first of many.
