It's Christmas Eve, 1958. Midnight Mass is a few hours away in the not-too-distant future.

 

There's a gathering at the Morley residence in preparation for the solemn event forthcoming. After a few celebratory drinks--and dinner, of course--the Morleys and McGuires will head on up to church. Maybe they'll make it through the long liturgical service without creating a scene--after all, Jimmy McGuire will be present--and then again, maybe they won't.

Although, I was brought up in the CofE faith, I can relate to Christmas Mass. It was the only service where the church attracted as many non-believers as believers, possibly because the start of the service coincided with the closure of the pubs for the day. The downstairs and upstairs pews were packed to the hilt.

Aw, you're most welcome, Pat. By the way, my maiden name is Baker. Some of my relatives' last names were Hoban and Byrnes, our friends included the Hughes family, the Murphys, and a handful of Finns, Quinns, O'Connors, and McGoverns.
