I recently took the light rail to the county courthouse in San Jose. I knew I
was getting close when I saw all the bail bonds shops lining the street. There
were no other businesses across from the civic center. These businesses should
be tightly regulated or put out of business by the government. They should not
have the authority to arrest someone in the middle of the night since they
aren't police. That is a Gestapo tactic. Senator Kamala Harris and Rand Paul
have introduced a bi-partisan bail reform bill. Under this bill the states
would be eligible for a grant if they enact reforms such as replacing money
bail with systems based on assessing a defendant’s risk to the community,
releasing inmates before trial in most cases, or appointing public defenders
at the earliest stages of pretrial detention. I hope it passes. Privatization
is death to democracy.
