Caring For My New Best Friend: A Puppy! by Morgan Smith and Coleen Liebsch revolves around a cute puppy, Spot, who tells readers how to care for him. He says he does not like people’s snacks and big dog food. He likes to drink water and, if he whines, that means he has to either poop or pee so he has to be taken out. Spot is scared of shots, but he knows these will keep him healthy and he says an extra hug and gentle pat will take his mind off the vet. He wants toys that are safe and he loves to jump and play.

The most important thing that comes across to young readers through this story is that all dogs have feelings and we should treat them with care and take care of them with love. The story teaches children kindness, compassion, and respect so that they can create a better and more peaceful world. The illustrations are adorable and they make the concept clear to young readers. The story will connect well with all dog and animal lovers and it gives them an idea of how to take care of puppies and grown dogs, and their likes and dislikes. The story has a good message for readers and these character building messages, when conveyed through stories, are encouraging and motivating for children and they get to understand easily. It is a good bedtime storybook and children in classrooms will benefit if it is used for read aloud sessions.
