I'm glad I kept reading past the first run-on sentence. I was thinking this was the actualy story, and not a scene from the movie they were watching. :)

I liked your characters...very real dialog. Good choice for a 'slice' from your book...I'll go back and read the whole thing when I get time.

Good luck in the contest.

I'm glad you liked the dialogue. I'll have to take a look at that run on sentence though.

Yeah, there are a lot of things in sci-fi films today that we don't do anymore. I think the genre has been working hard to appeal to the mainstream these days, which can be seen as good and bad. It is good in that they work harder to make things seem more realistic, but at the same time it loses some of the charm that the sci-fi fans loved. It was like speaking a secret lanuage.

Hi Julie,

I thought your dialogue and interaction very natural. I also liked the catch phrase at the end. Here's this girl who has such a strong point of view on the movie and yet at the end reveals she's barely seen any. Is that her way of lessening the pain of not being able to see movies generally?

Bek :)

My character is just opinionated about everything. She's a bit of a know-it-all actually. I think in this situation she does feel deprived, but she doesn't want to let on that she's at a disadvantge--that and she is more of an active sort than a sitter and watcher.

was so ironic. Here we are always referring to the dreaded Martians! But what I loved is that cheesey, B--50's feel of the film they were watching, and interesting to hear a Martian's pov. Very clever, Julie!

Good luck, Petra :))

I'll say, the movie they were watching did come out being a little too over the top. I mean, the idea of some alien getting to watch and be disgusted by a violent movie, fine, but the movie did not come across as particularly 'real'. It's been a long time since we could get away with saying 'cosmic torpedoes'.

Yes, I find films more and more grapic these days. It reminded me of an episode of the A-Team I recently re-saw. Mad Murdock was telling Face his escape wasn't dramatic enough--though it was real. Yet he said that for the movie audience it had to have more screaming, violence, and whatnot to make it seem more real. Anyway...everyone goes to the movies for different reasons, right?

I was wondering if it wasn't a bit over the top.

I really enjoyed reading this excerpt from your novel, The Mars Project. Your characterizations are vivid and your descriptions are entertaining.

I especially like your social commentary. It's interesting that humans are the most destructive life form on Earth, and to entertain ourselves, we watch movies full of even more destruction.

I will definitely check out your store on Lulu. Thanks for sharing your work with us.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. My difficulty is with brevity so I was hoping this short piece my do the job.
