America is and has never been Italy. Undoubtedly to the surprise of many, as a
nation state Italy is almost a century younger than the U.S., with that much
less time for its much older factions and divisions to develope a consensus
about politics, as well as a sense of collective identity. In addition, it's
democratic traditions and liberal values are barely a post-W.W. II
""experiment.""

Meanwhile, an important discussion Americans have avoided is the difference
between democracy and traditional liberal values. The two tend to be
conflated, so when push comes to shove here or abroad, it borders on the
impossible to develop anything close to a consensus about our goals and how to
achieve them.

Democracy, rule by a majority, can produce murderous oppression. Autocracies
can promote liberal values and limits on popular pogroms. This is not an
argument against democracy or for autocracy but, rather, a plea to understand
the difference between democracy and liberal values. Without understanding
reality, we may, with the best intentions, nonetheless advocate for policies
that will not advance our core values.

Liiving in a world of globalized everything, from internet culture to finance
to religious violence, people are looking for a smaller, more rooted identity,
from political purity to nationalist breakaway independence to ethnic purity
to hypenated Americanism, wherein the emphasis is on the divisive adjectives
of ""purity"

It is hard to disagree with much of what you say. However, I’m sure that you
are aware of a disturbing trend in online forums to disparage white authors
who tackle any issue involving race. You say “the same editors… are pushing
the same tales… about how black people ‘overcame,’ often written and
illustrated by white writers and artists.” This disregards a number of things.
1. Children’s stories, both fiction and non-fiction, commonly tell stories of
heroes who overcome adversity, and children will always thrive on such
stories. 2. Those “white writers and artists” who have written books that
celebrate civil rights are well-intentioned, and many have succeeded in
creating wonderful books. It serves no one to trash writers who celebrate
civil rights, regardless of the race of that writer. 3. Writers and
illustrators will create work that speaks from their hearts. Book publishers
will publish what they think will sell.

I am aware (as perhaps you are too) of the discouragement many children’s book
authors who have focused on issues of race and social justice currently are
feeling. I have heard one outstanding author say “maybe I’m done – I’ll just
write about white people from now on to avoid getting trashed.” We all lose
here.

I applaud that you are working to create the books you feel the world needs;
this is certainly putting your money where your mouth is. But there's no need
to take down others along the way.
