What makes me almost sadder than the story itself is the lack of any human
compassion from so many of the commenters. Some seem to think that being
desperate and trying for a better life because of poverty is somehow
unacceptable. Yet, when there are no jobs and no food and, in some cases,
draught, people with any initiative will certainly try to take their families
elsewhere simply to survive. So, 'stay home' is a death sentence. Many
Americans have ancestors who became American immigrants for economic reasons.
That is viewed as acceptable (remember the Irish potato famine, that was
economic migration, not war driving the people).
Yes, there is currently a problem, but a bit part of the problem is the rising
nationalism in Europe and certainly in America. Seeing desperate people as a
dangerous hoard, when most of them simply seek a life (survival) for their
families is really sad - especially in this country where so many want to
claim that America is ""Christian.""
